The Montessori educational approach was developed by Italian physician and educator Maria Montessori, more than hundred years ago.

For over a hundred years the Montessori method has been practiced worldwide, in the area of early childhood education and care of children from the age of infancy to kindergarten and, in many cases, even up to middle school level.

Children are free to work at their own pace with materials they have chosen, either alone or with others. The teacher relies on her/his observations of the children to determine which new activities and materials she may introduce to an individual child or to a small or large group.

The aim is to encourage active, self-directed learning and to strike a balance of individual mastery with small group collaboration within the whole group community.

Montessori education emphasizes independence, freedom within boundaries, and respect for a child’s natural psychological development.
