25 Years of excellence in education and child care.

How Montessori Education Benefits For Children in Their Early Years

Walk into a Montessori classroom and you won’t find rows of desks or a teacher lecturing from the front. Children choose what to work on. They move around the room. Learning is something they do for themselves.

That’s where the benefits of Montessori education begin, and the early years are when they count most. For many children, this is a first taste of school, and the room they step into shapes how they feel about it. A Montessori classroom is child-centric and orderly, with every part of it thoughtfully prepared. Young children get space to build independence and confidence, and to learn how to concentrate. Friendships with classmates from there, and so does a love for learning.

At New Horizons Montessori, we see these gains as the foundation for skills that matter to future happiness and success. This article shows what a Montessori classroom looks like and how it helps children in their early years. We also match our programs to each age and cover what to expect when you’re ready to visit.

What a Montessori Classroom Looks Like

Families who visit are often pleasantly surprised by what they find: a peaceful room with children absorbed in stimulating activities.

Children move about freely and follow their own interests. They build relationships with classmates along the way. The environment encourages discovery and concentration, and discipline grows there too.

Our school follows the principles of the Montessori method as prescribed by recognized Montessori institutes. We use specially created materials designed for early education, and we pair them with a nurturing child care environment for our young ones.

The Benefits of Montessori Education in the Early Years

These Montessori education benefits show up in small moments first. You might see a child choose an activity and stay with it, or two classmates working side by side.

  • Independence

Children choose their own activities and move freely, so they practice doing things for themselves from the start.

  • Confidence

Independence feeds it. A child who works through an activity alone feels capable, and that feeling carries into the next one.

  • Concentration and Discipline

A calm, orderly room makes it easier to focus. Over time, discipline grows alongside concentration.

  • Friendships With Classmates

Classmates share the space, so relationships form naturally.

  • A Love for Learning

When learning feels like discovery rather than a chore, children want more of it.

None of this plays out the same way for every child. The benefits of Montessori education are easier to judge once you’ve seen a classroom at work, which is why we invite families to visit.

Programs for Every Early Stage

What children gain from Montessori looks different at 18 months than it does at five, so we group our programs by age. They serve children from 18 months to 6 years, with half-day and full-day sessions, plus Full-Day Extended sessions.

  • Pre-Primary (18 to 36 months). This is a first experience of school. It’s comparable to traditional preschool or nursery school, except that the Montessori approach is a holistic one.
  • Primary (three to six years). Children of three, four, and five engage in learning along many dimensions. The program welcomes children who’ve had Montessori in Pre-Primary and those who are new to it.
  • Montessori Kindergarten (Full Day), five to six years. Each year, a sizable minority of our kindergarteners are new to our school or new to Montessori. For some, it’s their first school experience. We also offer an Enrichment Kindergarten program for children who attend half day at public elementary schools.
  • After School Enrichment (Kindergarten to First Grade). For ages five to seven, this academic enrichment program starts after 3:30 pm throughout the week.
  • Summer Camp. Camp runs in July and August with weekly themes, for ages 18 months to 7 years. It enrolls new, returning, or former students of New Horizons Montessori, along with their siblings.

You can meet our faculty and browse the gallery, and parents’ own words are there too, with a link to Google reviews. The For Parents section holds a school calendar and a policy handbook, along with a pre-conference questionnaire. There’s a page on the Montessori Difference as well, and the site points to well-known Montessori alumni such as Jeff Bezos, Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and Jimmy Wales.

Behind all of it sits the long view. We want children to leave us with skills for today and tomorrow, and with a habit of learning that lasts a lifetime. That’s why families choose New Horizons, Montessori.
